    Let hardcover book be x

    Let paperback book be y

    2x+3y=$118….Equation 1

    3x+2y=$137…. Equation 2

    Solve for x and y using simultaneous equation

    Using elimination method

    2x+3y=118……×3

    3x+2y=137……×2

    6x+9y=354

    6x+4y=274

    9y-4y=80

    5y=80

    y=80÷5=16

    substituting y=16 into equation 1

    2x+3(16)=118

    2x+48=118

    2x=70

    x=70÷2=35

    Therefore hardcover costs $35 each

    paperback cover costs $16 each
