Answer:Dunes and beaches make upnearly 1,800 of the 3,000 miles ofseacoast in the five Gulf states,Georgia, and Puerto Rico. Erosion isa problem on about 900 miles ofAtlantic and Gulf coast dunes andbeaches in these areas. With theright kinds of native and naturalizedplants, much of this erosion can beprevented. This publication was written tohelp people select and use plants tostabilize and beautify dunes. It isintended mainly for planners, iandscapers, nursery operators, developers, and homeowners. Theinformation applies to coastal dunesand beaches of Puerto Rico, Texas,Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama,Florida, and Georgia.Using plants to control duneerosion is a high priority of SoilConservation Service (SCS) plantmaterials programs in coastal statesand the Caribbean Area. From 1973to 1975, 191 representative dunesites were studied in Georgia,Florida, Alabama, and Puerto Rico(4, 5, 6, 7, 8V These studiesidentified more than 200 species ofnative and naturalized dune plantsand were supplemented by lessdetailed studies in Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.Of the plant species identified inthe SCS field studies, 43 have goodpotential for dune revegctationbecause of their favorablecharacteristics for erosion control, their frequency of occurrence, andtheir dominance in the naturalecosystem. This publicationdescribes each of these 43 plants, their areas of occurrence, andpropagation techniques.Ocean waves, littoral drift, andother natural forces—as well as theactivities of people—determine theadaptability and suitability of plantsfor coastal dunes. This publicationexplains how the dune ecosystemand the actions of people must beconsidered in planning revegetation. It also discusses methods ofpreparing the planting site andestablishing and maintaining theplants.SCS has selected some of thefeatured plants for thorough testingand comparison. Several years oftests and field trials are requiredbefore SCS and cooperating agenciescan identify superior plants andrelease approved cultivars. Thesecultivars are the source ofcommercially produced seed andplanting stock used in localconservation programs. For further assistance in protectingcoastal dunes, contact your localSCS office, which generally is listedin municipal telephone directoriesunder “United States Government,Department of Agriculture.Step-by-step explanation:
