    How to determine the value

    From the information given, we have that:
    • XY = 3a
    • XZ = 5a-4
    • YZ = 14
    We have that Y lies between X and Z
    Since that XY is a line segment and Y is a point lies between X & Z.
    XZ =  XY + YZ
    Now, substitute the values, we have
    5a – 4 = 3a + 14
    collect like terms
    5a – 3a = 14 + 4
    Add/ substract like terms
    2a = 18
    Make ‘x’ subject of formula
    a = 18/2
    a = 9
    The value of XY is then:
    XY = 3a
    XY = 3× 9
    XY = 27
    Thus, the value of XY is 27
