5x + 3y = 18
3x – 3y = 15
3y and -3y can be cancled out becuase + and – cancel out and they both have 3y in them. We don’t have to switch any signs in this case. You can just add them all exept 3y and -3y becuase they will be canceled out.
8x = 33
x = 4.125
Now we know what x is. We need to figure out what y is now. To figure out y chose an equation from the problem and plug in the x value. Lets chose 3x – 3y = 15.
3(4.125) – 3y = 15
12.375 – 3y = 15
-3y = 2.625
y = -0.875
