Gene Pools

A gene pool is not simply composed of all of the genes of organisms within a population; it also contains all of the different combinations that make up the gene pool. Evolution in a population means that the gene pool has changed. The gene pool can decrease if a gene dies out and is no longer present in the population. When a species is in danger of becoming extinct, the number of genes in the gene pool has been reduced. This reduction in the gene pool limits variations. A diverse gene pool provides biodiversity in the population and increases the survival rate for the species. Small gene pools are greatly affected by genetic diseases, infertility, deformities, and changes in the environment.
