Question

At a fruit stand, apples can be purchased for $0.15 each and pears for$0.20 each. At these rates, a bag of apples and pears was purchased for $3.80. If the bag contained 21 pieces of fruit, how many of the pieces were pears? Answers 1. ngockhue The total number of the pieces of pears in the bag containing 21 fruits are 13. ### Explain the term solution of linear equation? • The points where the lines representing the intersection of the two linear equations intersect are referred to as the solution of either a linear equation. • In other words, the set of all feasible values for the variables that satisfy the specified linear equation constitutes the solution set of both the system of linear equations. For the stated question; • Each apple cost =$0.15
• Each pears cost = $0.20. • Total cost =$3.80.
• Total umber of fruits = 21
Let ‘x’ be the number of apples.
Let y be the number of pears.
Then, linear equation forms.
0.15x + 0.20y = 3.80   …eq 1
and, x + y = 21
x = y – 21 ….eq 2
put in eq 1
0.15(y – 21) + 0.20y = 3.80
On solving;
y = 13 and x = 8
Thus, total number of the pieces of pears in the bag containing 21 fruits are 13.
