Adalyn has nine more than twice the number of skittles than Morgan has. If twice the number of skittles that Adalyn has is two more than five times the number of skittles that Morgan has, how many does each girl have?

Answers

  1. The number of Skittles Adalyn and Morgan has is 41 and 16 respectively.

    Algebra

    let
    • Number of Skittles Adalyn has = x
    • Number of Skittles Morgan has = y
    x = 2y + 9
    twice the number of skittles that Adalyn has is two more than five times the number of skittles that Morgan has,
    2x = 5y + 2
    • substitute x = 2y + 9 into
    2x = 5y + 2
    2(2y + 9) = 5y+2
    4y + 18 = 5y+2
    • subtract 4y and 2 on both sides
    18 – 2 = 5y – 4y
    16 = y
    or
    y = 16 Skittles
    Recall,
    x = 2y + 9
    = 2(16) + 9
    = 32 + 9
    = 41 Skittles
